You have sprinters, swimmers, weightlifters, and cyclists. Each discipline requires distinct training schedules, equipment, recovery windows, and execution styles. Yet leadership must build an overarching infrastructure that aligns everyone toward a singular goal while respecting the unique operational realities of each sport.
In business, this is the ultimate test of multi-departmental leadership.
🎯 Understanding the Operational Blindspot
When leadership teams sit at the strategic level, it is completely natural to develop operational blindspots. Without direct visibility into daily frontline execution, senior leaders often design centralized policies aimed at creating consistency, without realizing how those policies impact the hidden dynamics of day-to-day delivery.
Earlier in my career in institutional management, senior leadership considered implementing a standardized rule requiring all professional staff to remain on-site until 5:00 PM every Friday to ensure operational coverage.
From a high-level management perspective, the logic made total sense: they wanted visible presence and consistent operational availability.
However, because senior management operated on standard administrative schedules, they had an understandable blindspot regarding the frontline reality. Having worked on the operational side myself, I was able to highlight what was missing from the view at the top. These professionals were regularly putting in discretionary hours during evenings and weekends to meet tight delivery deadlines.
Enforcing a rigid 5:00 PM clock-watch risked unintentionally eroding the very goodwill and flexibility that kept the system running smoothly outside standard hours.
By surfacing that blindspot constructively, leadership was able to pause, reassess, and protect the team's operational rhythm. It wasn't bad management, it was simply a gap in systemic visibility.

High-performance environments don't expect executive leaders to know every micro-detail of every discipline. Instead, they build communication bridges that bring frontline realities into strategic decision-making.
